We were installing the SharePoint 2010 CU that was recommended by vendor to resolve some of the issues that we were facing with one of the custom developed application.
We installed it on 8 to 9 farms without any issues till we got to a Farm that was throwing below error while executing the CU
“The expected version of the product was not found on the system”
After some research I found the way to overcome this error:-
Solution is when executing it append the parameter :- PACKAGE.BYPASS.DETECTION.CHECK=1 (run this from command line)

we were trying to run Lync 2013 sp1 patch, we are also fasing the same issue.
we tried to install with PACKAGE.BYPASS.DETECTION.CHECK=1 it worked but we need to deploy this patch to all end users with silent mode where it is not working.

The above issue is related to Share-point & doesn’t apply to Lync. But to answer your query about Lync:
For installing to all users you need to have some mechanism such as group policy or SCCM or any other tool that your organization is using.
